Obama ‘first gay president’

Obama ‘first gay president’

It won't be nearly as controversial as Time magazine's breastfeeding cover, but Newsweek's May 21 issue declares Barack Obama the country's "first gay president."

The accompanying cover story was written by Andrew Sullivan, the popular--and openly gay--political blogger.

The magazine even gives the commander-in-chief a rainbow halo. Obama, Sullivan writes, "had to discover his black identity and then reconcile it with his white family, just as gays discover their homosexual identity and then have to reconcile it with their heterosexual family."

The full cover story is not yet online, but in a blog post published earlier this week, Sullivan wrote that Obama's support of gay marriage brought him to tears.

John Travolta Gay Sex Scandal: Revelations Latest in String of Stories About Allegedly Bi-Sexual Star

"John Travolta Caught in Cheating Scandal" trumpets the front-page headline on The National Enquirer that is illustrated by a naked-from-the-waist-up picture of the Saturday Night Fever star in a bathrobe.

According to the Enquirer, Travolta reportedly has been cheating on his pregnant wife Kelly Preston by engaging in gay cruising. "I saw him with his lover and he couldn't get enough!" an "Eyewitness" is quoted on the Enquirer cover. The story alleges that John Travolta is part of Hollywood's "secret" gay sub-culture, a group of powerful gay and bisexual male power players who meet for gay sex at spas. History of Allegations

This is not the first time that John Travolta has been accused of having engaged in gay sex by the tabloid press. In the 1990s, a tabloid published a story that the movie star, whose near-dead career had been resuscitated by the great success of Pulp Fiction (1994) had been black-balled from a Los Angeles country club after cruising for gay sex in the locker room. Other media outlets have reported that Travolta has been banned by a major hotel chain due to his propensity for hitting on men in hotel gyms.

Rumors of Travolta's bisexuality are as old as his career. Unlike Tom Cruise, another movie star plagued by "Is he Gay?" rumors, Travolta has taken a more relaxed attitude. He has never resorted to litigation -- at least publicly -- unlike the combative Cruise who has resorted to the courts to quash rumors he is gay.

He did take action against gay porn star/filmmaker Paul Barresi, who alleged in another National Enquirer cover story that he had been Travolta's gay lover. Published in 1990, the article claims the two became lovers after a 1982 encounter in a locker room shower. The affair had ended by the time Barresi took $100,000 for his story.

Subsequently, Barresi issued a letter retracting the allegations to Travolta's lawyers. He later claimed he did so as he was on the verge of a nervous breakdown due to legal pressures. Hollywood's Gay Sub-Culture The National Enquirer uses gay writer Robert Randolph as its source. Randolph, who wrote the book You'll Never Spa in This Town Again, claims to have known Travolta's for 10 years.

He claims the movie star is a member of a "secret gay spa subculture." According to Randolph, "John Travolta has been cheating on Kelly for years! And when the details emerge, he's gonna make Tiger Woods look like a Boy Scout." The idea that Hollywood has a "secret" gay subculture is an old one, dating to at least the 1920s. In that era, as well as into the late 20th Century, gays did have to live in a world of their own due to the taboo against homosexuality.

Even in post-Stonewall America, gay or bisexual players in Hollywood, particularly actors like John Travolta who portray a macho image in action films, have to stay in the "lavender closet" lest they alienate their fans, male and female.

Though there have been many rumors about certain actors, no openly gay movie star has achieved superstar status since the Silent Era, when such things weren't discussed publicly. Is John Travolta Gay?

The National Enquirer quotes Robert Randolph as saying that he first met John Travolta in 1998, seven years after he married Kelly Preston. Preston, like Travolta, is a Scientologist. There are articles on the Internet that claim that Scientology advertises itself in Hollywood as a "cure" for homosexuality and uses Travolta as the poster boy for its treatment.

These "articles" claim that the Church of Scientology ordered Travolta and Preston to marry, as they had ordered Lisa Marie Presley to marry the allegedly homosexual Michael Jackson. Randolph told the Enquirer,

"I believe the marriage is a total fraud because John is totally into guys and has been having sex with them behind Kelly's back for years." Randolph claims, "He came on to me a number of times. I always turned him down. But there was always some guy who was willing to have sex with him.

And John didn't stop cheating on Kelly after either of their children was born." According to Randolph, "John's a cheating dog. It's just been wrong, because his wife seems like such a sweet woman." It was Randolph who is the "eyewitness" quoted on the Enquirer cover:

Claiming that Travolta's homosexuality is "one of Hollywood's worst kept secrets," Randolph went on to allege, "He blatantly cruises guys, and doesn't seem to care who sees him.

I saw him with his lover and he couldn't get enough." Randolph believes that, "John should come out of the closet already and stop living a lie. His wife Kelly deserves so much better."

Media Coverage How this will play in the mass media remains to be seen. Previous allegations of John Travolta's secret gay life that have been carried in the supermarket tabloids have not been picked up by the mainstream media.

In fact, the recent revelations were ignored by the mainstream press for several days, but are now being carried by such respectable newspapers as The Miami Herald and The Philadelphia Inquirer.

Will this story go viral, like the Tiger Woods cheating scandal? Time will tell. For Kelly Preston, who recently lost her teenage son and was the victim of a blackmail plot, the "outing" of her husband might not prove that earth-shattering.

The couple have been through this before and they have their faith to fall back on. The couple have been married for 19 years and seem devoted to each other. Many an otherwise "straight" man has been known to seek gratification "on the low."
